Derech Oriya – The Way of Oriya was born from a life that was taken, and from the lives that remained. Oriya’s murder on October 7, 2023, left behind an absence that can never be filled. But memory does not have to stand still. It can move. It can create. It can become a hand extended to someone who is struggling to stand again. Derech Oriya transforms remembrance into action, creating places where survivors, bereaved families, and others carrying the wounds of October 7 can breathe, connect, create, and slowly find their own way back into life. We cannot change what happened. We can choose what we do with what remains.

KADDISH for ORIYA

Kaddish for Oriya is a 25-minute oratorio composed by musician and historian Hannie Ricardo. The work began in 2022 as a Kaddish for the Jewish composers of Theresienstadt, whose music Ricardo has researched and performed for decades. After her daughter Oriya was murdered at the Nova music festival on October 7, 2023, the work became Kaddish for Oriya, weaving the memory of the Terezín composers together with Oriya and the young people murdered at the music festivals. The work premiered at the Israeli Opera on October 7, 2024, and has since been performed in Israel. The next chapter is Kaddish International: bringing the work to stages around the world and establishing an annual October tradition in which musicians and communities gather to perform, remember, and carry these voices forward. The United States premiere in Connecticut is the first step in that journey.Next year, on October 2027, Kaddish for Oriya will be played in Philladelphia.

A Breath of Air Ranch is being created in Pardes Hanna, Israel, as a place of healing for survivors of trauma and bereaved families. Built around horses, nature, and human connection, the ranch will bring together equine therapy, therapeutic gardens, art and music, movement, and spaces simply to sit, meet, and breathe. A place away from hospitals and clinics—a place that feels alive.
Oriya loved horses. She loved people, gave generously, and had a rare kindness that drew others to her. I want the ranch to carry that part of her into the world—to be a place where people come together, where community and kindness are celebrated, and where Oriya is remembered not for the way she died, but for the way she lived.

THE WILL OF ORIYA
All her life, Oriya heard her mother tell her how extraordinary she was. Every morning and every evening, they would recite five sentences together: “I am smart. I am talented. I am beautiful. I can achieve everything I want. And I deserve it.” They were the words of a mother who wanted her daughter to demand more from life—and never settle for less than the happiness she deserved. After Oriya was murdered at the Nova Music Festival on October 7, her mother found a small pink notepad in her apartment. And there they were. The words Oriya had heard her whole life, now written in her own hand. The words had made the journey from mother to daughter—and, impossibly, back again. Among the sentences, one stood out: I DESERVE TO BE HAPPY! ☺ With a little smile beside it—the same smile her mother still draws next to her signature, as she did all her life. Today, Oriya’s handwriting carries that message forward. When you take these words with you, you carry a little piece of her story. A little light she left behind. I deserve to be happy. We all do.
